How Odoo's Reporting Engine Works and How to Build Custom Reports

One of the most common frustrations business owners have with their software is not being able to get the exact report they need. The data is in the system somewhere, but pulling it out in the right format — filtered, grouped, and presented the way you need it for a meeting, a board report, or a strategic decision — often requires exporting to Excel and spending an hour on manual formatting. Odoo's reporting engine is designed to reduce that friction significantly.

    Built-In Reports

Every Odoo module comes with a set of pre-built reports. Accounting includes profit and loss, balance sheet, aged receivables, aged payables, tax reports, and cash flow statements. Sales includes pipeline analysis, invoice analysis, and sales by product or customer. Inventory includes stock valuation, turnover analysis, and incoming/outgoing shipment reports. Manufacturing includes production analysis, work center load, and cost analysis.

These reports are interactive — you can filter by date range, group by any field, and drill down into the underlying records with a click. For many businesses, the built-in reports cover 80% of their reporting needs without any customization.

    Pivot Tables and Graphs

Odoo's reporting views include pivot table and graph modes that let you slice data dynamically. Want to see revenue by product category by month? Switch to pivot view, drag the fields you want into rows and columns, and the data rearranges in real time.

Graph views let you visualize the same data as bar charts, line charts, or pie charts. These views can be saved as favorites so you can return to your preferred analysis with one click rather than rebuilding it each time.

    Custom Reports with Odoo Spreadsheet

For reports that go beyond what the built-in views offer, Odoo's Spreadsheet tool lets you create custom reports that pull live data from any module. You can combine data from sales, inventory, and accounting into a single spreadsheet, apply formulas, create charts, and share the result with your team.

The key advantage over exporting to Excel is that Odoo Spreadsheet maintains a live connection to your data. When you open the spreadsheet next week, the numbers reflect the current state of the business — you don't need to re-export and rebuild.

    SQL and Developer-Level Reporting

For businesses with advanced reporting needs — custom financial consolidations, complex margin analysis across multiple dimensions, or reports that need to combine data in ways the standard tools don't support — Odoo's underlying PostgreSQL database is accessible for custom queries. Developer-level reports can be built as custom modules that appear in Odoo's reporting menu alongside the built-in reports.

This approach requires technical skill, but it gives you complete control over what data is included and how it's presented.

    Scheduled and Automated Reports

Odoo can email reports on a defined schedule — daily sales summaries, weekly inventory snapshots, monthly financial statements — so decision-makers receive the information they need without having to log in and pull it themselves. Scheduled reports can be customized per recipient, so the CEO gets a high-level summary while the operations manager gets a detailed breakdown.

Getting the Most from Odoo Reporting

The biggest mistake we see is businesses that don't use Odoo's reporting at all — they export everything to spreadsheets out of habit. If you're on Odoo and still spending hours on manual reporting, there's almost certainly a better way to get the data you need.

At Custom Pixel Design, we help clients set up their reporting after the core implementation is stable. Once your data is flowing cleanly through Odoo, we build the dashboards and reports that turn that data into actionable visibility. Contact us to discuss your reporting needs.
