    Odoo 18 vs Odoo 19: What Is New and Should You Upgrade?

    If your business is running on Odoo, one of the questions you are probably asking right now is whether it is time to upgrade to the latest version. Odoo 18 was released in October 2024 and brought a meaningful set of improvements to the platform. Odoo 19 followed in September 2025 and pushed things further, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence, user experience, and operational efficiency across every module.

    At Custom Pixel Design, we evaluate every new Odoo release closely so we can give our clients honest guidance on whether and when to upgrade. Here is our breakdown of what changed between versions 18 and 19, and how to think about whether upgrading makes sense for your business right now.

    What Changed in Odoo 18

    Odoo 18 was a refinement release. It did not reinvent the platform but built on the strong foundation of Odoo 17 with improvements focused on usability, performance, and specific module enhancements.

    Interface and Navigation

    One of the most immediately noticeable changes in Odoo 18 was a cleaner, more modern interface. Navigation was streamlined to make it faster to move between modules, and the overall design felt lighter and more intuitive than previous versions. The mobile experience was also significantly improved, with a more responsive layout that made it easier for teams to work from their phones and tablets without losing functionality.

    Sales and Quotations

    The quotation builder in Odoo 18 received meaningful attention. PDF outputs became more polished, editing control improved, and a new sales commissions module was introduced, allowing businesses to define commission rules based on invoice amounts, quantities sold, margins, or recurring revenue. For businesses in industries like distribution, construction, or consulting where quotes require detailed customization, these changes made a real difference.

    Accounting and Finance

    Bank reconciliation became more automated in Odoo 18, reducing the manual work involved in matching transactions. Tax management improvements made it easier for businesses with multi-region operations to handle different tax types and reporting requirements. New budgeting tools were also added to the accounting module, giving finance teams better control over tracking costs against vendor bills.

    Spreadsheets and Dashboards

    Odoo 18 significantly upgraded the spreadsheet and dashboard experience. Lists and pivot charts became editable directly within the spreadsheet interface. New diagram types including combo, scatter, and waterfall charts were added. Collaboration improved with cell commenting and integration with the Odoo Discussions module, making it easier for teams to work together on financial and operational data in real time.

    eCommerce and Website

    The website builder became more flexible in Odoo 18, with better support for multilingual content, improved SEO tools, and a cleaner checkout process designed to reduce cart abandonment. Editable URLs made it easier to manage web presence without starting from scratch, and product customization options in the eCommerce module became more advanced.

    HR and Recruitment

    Odoo 18 expanded the native HR capabilities, covering more of the recruiting process without requiring additional add-ons. Automated applicant tracking improved, making it faster to move candidates through the hiring pipeline. Payroll and timesheet improvements also landed in this version.

    What Changed in Odoo 19

    Odoo 19, released at Odoo Experience in Brussels in September 2025, was a more ambitious release. The headline theme was artificial intelligence, with AI capabilities woven throughout the platform rather than sitting in a separate module. Beyond AI, the release addressed usability gaps that had accumulated over previous versions and brought improvements across virtually every module.

    Artificial Intelligence Throughout the Platform

    The most significant thing about Odoo 19 is not any single feature. It is the way AI has been integrated across the entire system. Rather than relying on a single AI provider, Odoo 19 built a flexible AI framework that can connect to different models, giving businesses more control and independence.

    In practical terms, this means AI is now available wherever it is useful. In the CRM, smart agents offer real-time suggestions for lead prioritization and follow-up. In the website module, AI can translate content and generate product descriptions automatically. In customer service, AI chatbots handle routine inquiries and order updates. In HR, recruiting and contract management benefit from smarter automation. The result is a platform that requires less manual work across the board.

    User Experience Improvements

    Odoo 19 addressed several usability gaps that users had been asking about for years. Activity management got faster with simplified scheduling options that let users reschedule tasks with a single click rather than manually setting dates. The contact module was redesigned for clarity. Navigation continued to improve, with the overall interface feeling noticeably more polished and responsive.

    eCommerce and Website

    The eCommerce experience in Odoo 19 was significantly upgraded. Shop and product pages gained more flexible layout options. The checkout process was improved with better unit of measure handling, an improved click and collect experience, and variant previews directly on the product page. Integration with Google Merchant Center and Gelato for print-on-demand fulfillment opened new sales channels for product businesses. SEO tools were enhanced with automatic checks, accessibility improvements, and better analytics.

    Accounting and Finance

    Odoo 19 introduced new tools for mobile bank reconciliation, making transaction matching easier for finance teams on the go. A new expense card feature was added, giving employees virtual and physical cards that sync expenses automatically while giving managers control over spending policies. Payroll and HR received improvements to overtime tracking, time-off management, and contract handling.

    Inventory and Warehouse Management

    Inventory management in Odoo 19 became more transparent and efficient, with improvements to packaging handling, custom serial numbers, better stock availability displays, and improved logic for stock movement between companies and sales orders.

    ESG and Compliance

    One of the more forward-looking additions in Odoo 19 was increased attention to environmental and compliance reporting, reflecting the growing importance of ESG requirements for businesses operating in regulated markets. This signals that Odoo is thinking seriously about the direction enterprise software needs to go over the next several years.

    Should You Upgrade?

    The answer depends on where you are starting from and what your business needs.

    If you are on Odoo 17 or earlier, upgrading to Odoo 19 is worth serious consideration. The gap in performance, usability, and features between older versions and the current platform is significant, and staying on an older version means missing improvements that could genuinely benefit your daily operations. It also means accumulating technical debt as the gap between your version and the current version grows.

    If you are on Odoo 18, the case for upgrading to 19 right now depends on your priorities. If AI automation, improved eCommerce capabilities, or the new HR and expense features are relevant to your business, upgrading makes sense and the process is relatively straightforward given how close the two versions are. If your current setup is stable and working well, there is no urgency, and waiting a cycle is a reasonable choice.

    One practical note: Odoo officially supports the last three versions at any given time. You are never forced to upgrade immediately, but planning your upgrade path proactively is much easier and less disruptive than scrambling when support for your version ends.
