Odoo's Customer Portal: How to Give Clients Self-Service Access

Every business spends staff time answering the same questions repeatedly: Where is my order? Can I get a copy of my invoice? Has my payment been processed? Odoo's customer portal puts the answers to all of these questions directly in your customers' hands — without requiring a staff member to look it up and respond. It's one of the features that makes the biggest visible difference to clients and saves the most internal time.

    What the Customer Portal Includes

When a customer is given portal access in Odoo, they can log in through a secure web link and view their quotations and sales orders, their invoices and payment history, their project tasks and progress (if you're using Odoo Project), their support tickets (if you're using Helpdesk), and any documents you've shared with them.

The portal is real-time, so the information customers see always reflects the current state of their account without any manual updates from your team.

    Enabling Portal Access

To give a customer portal access, go to their contact record in Odoo and click Grant Portal Access. Odoo sends them an invitation email with a link to set up their login. From that point on, they can access their portal at any time from any device.

You control what each customer can see. The portal respects Odoo's access rules, so customers only see records that belong to them — they can't see other customers' data or anything you haven't explicitly shared.

    Paying Invoices Online

One of the most practically useful portal features is online payment. When a customer views an invoice in the portal, they can pay it directly using a credit card, bank transfer, or any payment provider you've configured in Odoo. Stripe, PayPal, Mollie, and others are all supported.

This removes friction from the payment process and often speeds up collections. Customers who can pay in two clicks pay faster than customers who have to write and mail a check or manually initiate a bank transfer.

    Signing Documents Online

If you use Odoo Sign, customers can review and sign quotes, contracts, and other documents directly from the portal without printing, signing, and scanning. The signed document is stored automatically against the relevant record in Odoo, creating a clean audit trail.

For service businesses where proposals and service agreements need to be formally accepted, this reduces the time between sending a document and getting it back signed — which accelerates the sales cycle.

    Project Visibility for Clients

For agencies and service firms, the ability to share project progress with clients via the portal is particularly valuable. You can give clients a view of their project's task board, allowing them to see task statuses, leave comments, and upload documents — without granting access to your internal project management tools or other clients' data.

This transparency builds trust and reduces the number of status update requests your project team has to respond to.

    Setting It Up

Enabling the customer portal requires almost no development work — it's built into Odoo out of the box. The main configuration decisions are which modules you want to expose in the portal and what level of visibility each customer should have.

At Custom Pixel Design, we configure customer portals as part of our standard Odoo implementations. If you're already on Odoo and haven't enabled the portal yet, it's one of the fastest wins you can implement. Reach out and we'll help you set it up.
